The International Accreditation Council for Diverse Education (IACDE) is pleased to announce that the School of the Great Commission Bible College & Seminary (SOGC), under the leadership of Founder and Chancellor Rev. Dr. Winford Thompson, has achieved Candidate for Accreditation status with IACDE.
This milestone marks the beginning of an important stage in SOGC’s journey with IACDE as the institution engages in institutional self-study, review, reflection, and continuous improvement toward full accreditation.
A Legacy of Preparing Kingdom Builders
Founded in South Carolina, the School of the Great Commission traces its institutional history to 2003 and describes its mission as providing Christian-based education to learners both near and abroad. Its guiding purpose is deeply rooted in preparing what the institution calls “Kingdom Builders”—individuals equipped to grow in their understanding of Scripture, develop their God-given gifts, and serve confidently in ministry and leadership.
SOGC describes itself as a family-centered educational ministry committed not only to students’ academic development, but also to their spiritual and ministerial growth. Its philosophy emphasizes mentoring, guidance, service, leadership development, and continued support of students beyond the classroom.
The institution offers educational opportunities across a broad range of faith-centered disciplines. Bible College areas listed by SOGC include Christian Counseling, Spiritual Health & Wellness, Christian Humanities, Christian Performing Arts, Christian Business Development, Christian Education, Christian Leadership, Missionary/Evangelism, Women’s Ministry, Sacred Music, and Radio Broadcasting. Its Seminary offerings include Theology, Pastoral Ministry, Ministry, Chaplaincy, Evangelism, Biblical Studies, and Church Administration.
Leadership Grounded in Ministry and Service
At the center of the institution’s development is Rev. Dr. Winford Thompson, Founder and Chancellor of the School of the Great Commission Bible College & Seminary.
Dr. Thompson’s background reflects decades of involvement in ministry, Christian education, pastoral leadership, counseling, nonprofit development, and the establishment of faith-based educational initiatives. An earlier institutional biography describes his ministry roots as extending back to his licensure to preach in 1981 and identifies him as a founder of multiple ministry and educational initiatives.
Today, his vision for SOGC continues to center on developing individuals who are prepared to serve. In his Chancellor’s message, Dr. Thompson describes the school as an educational ministry designed to help Kingdom Builders build God’s Kingdom while helping students develop the gifts and skills they already possess.
That vision is supported by an extensive academic leadership structure.
SOGC’s current leadership directory identifies Dr. Danielle Watson as Vice President of Academic Affairs; Dr. Virginia B. White as Provost of SOGC Bible College; Dr. Janice Grier as Provost of SOGC Seminary; and Dr. Sharron J. Brown-Myles as Provost of the SOGC Professional Training Institute.
Additional academic leaders oversee specialized areas including Kingdom Music, Humanities and Performing Arts, Chaplaincy, outreach, regional operations, and campus leadership. The institution is also supported by a Board of Trustees chaired by Dr. James Bell, with representation identified from South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, and Florida.
This breadth of leadership illustrates an institution that has developed beyond the work of a single founder into a broader community of educators, ministry leaders, administrators, and trustees working together around its educational mission.
Entering the IACDE Candidacy Process
Becoming an IACDE Candidate for Accreditation is an important institutional milestone, but candidacy should not be confused with full IACDE accreditation.
Candidate status signifies that the School of the Great Commission Bible College & Seminary has entered IACDE’s formal accreditation pathway and will now continue through the required institutional review and self-study process.
Through candidacy, the institution has an opportunity to examine its mission, governance, academic operations, student experience, policies, institutional effectiveness, and quality-assurance practices as part of its continued development.
For IACDE, this process is not intended simply to determine whether an institution can satisfy a checklist. It is designed to encourage institutions to examine who they are, whom they serve, how effectively they fulfill their stated missions, and where opportunities exist for measurable improvement.
That philosophy is particularly meaningful for institutions such as SOGC whose models emerge from faith, ministry, community service, and nontraditional approaches to education.
Recognizing Diverse Pathways in Education
The School of the Great Commission Bible College & Seminary represents the type of institutional diversity that is central to IACDE’s mission.
For more than two decades, SOGC has developed an educational identity centered on Christian formation, ministry preparation, leadership, service, and accessibility. Its academic areas demonstrate that theological education can intersect with counseling, wellness, leadership, performing arts, business, chaplaincy, missions, communications, and other forms of service.
IACDE believes that educational quality and institutional accountability should be evaluated in meaningful relationship to an institution’s mission, population, structure, and educational purpose.
As SOGC enters this next phase, candidacy provides an opportunity to document those practices, strengthen institutional systems, demonstrate educational effectiveness, and continue building upon the foundation established under Dr. Thompson’s leadership.
